Club History
£1,000 was raised in loans and grants by members in 1953 to found the Club. In a short period of time the members established an excellent green and a spacious and well equipped pavilion.
Wollaton Bowling Club is a flourishing mixed private Club set in the village of Wollaton. Wollaton is an area in the west of the City of Nottingham. It is home to Wollaton Hall with its museum, deer park, lake, walks and golf course. Wollaton Park housed prisoners of war and US troops during the World Wars. The picturesque Wollaton Village has remained relatively unchanged over the past few hundred years and is dominated by the Admiral Rodney Public House and the Anglican Church of St. Leonard’s dating back to the 1200s. It also features historic cottages and water pump. The village was swallowed up by the suburbanisation of Nottingham and is now considered part of the Greater Nottingham Metropolitan area.
.
The Club is sited on land that was sold to the village for sports and recreational activities by the Middleton family just after the 2nd World War. The green is only a few hundred yards away from Wollaton Hall and Deer Park which was home to the Middleton family up until it was sold to Nottingham City Council. The Club Badge depicts the Elizabethan architecture of Wollaton Hall and the Middleton Coat of Arms.
Club Membership is currently 100+. The green can accommodate 6 rinks comfortably and if stretched 7 rinks. The grass is Cumberland Turf and is rated as one of the better greens in Nottinghamshire.
The Club has a good social calendar that extends through the closed season. We play in the Men’s EBA Midweek 4 x 4 League, the Men’s EBA Midweek 3 x 4 League and 2 EBA Mixed Leagues. There are several internal Competitions throughout the season and many members enter County and National Competitions.
Wollaton Bowling Club always extends a warm welcome to new members and visiting clubs.
